What is the Coroner's Responsibility to the People

The Charleston County Coroner is an elected official who independently investigates sudden and unexpected deaths occurring within Charleston County.

The Coroner:

Acts as an independent investigator for sudden and unexpected deaths
Determines cause and manner of death
Identifies the decedent
Notifies next-of-kin

In determining the cause of death, the coroner assembles information from multiple agencies and individuals including law enforcement, EMS, firefighters, doctors, nurses, family members and friends to determine an accurate cause and manner of death based on information gathered from scene evidence, toxicology, autopsy reports, medical records and interviews with family and friends.

The coroner also issues burial transit permits, cremation permits, conducts inquests and is the central depository of all records related to deaths.

It is more important than ever to elect the most qualified candidate who is prepared from day one to serve as Charleston County Coroner.

The coroner has the potential to deal with all citizens in Charleston County in difficult times.
